Periyar Tiger Reserve was awarded the U.N.-India Biodiversity Governance award instituted by the Government of India and United Nations Development Programme for best managed Protected Area in the country. The award was announced during the on-going Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at Hyderabad on Wednesday, Oct. 17th, 2012. Sanjayan Kumar, the Deputy Director of Periyar East Division and Sri. Hydrose Meeran, Chairman of the Confederation of Periyar East Eco-Development Committees received the award of Rs. 50,000 and a citation, in the presence of delegates from over 100 countries. The Reserve attained this award on the strength of its holistic management strategies which involved the participation of local communities in wildlife conservation. More details and pictures soon.
